Description : Shrub or small tree, evergreen, 2–10 m tall; young branches densely to laxly covered with whitish-grey sponge-like hairs. Leaves in pseudowhorls of 5–10, oblanceolate, lanceolate-oblong, 5.5–15 by 2–5.2 cm; glabrous above, whitish-grey and densely covered by branched hairs forming a sponge-like indumentum beneath; base cuneate to truncate; margin entire; apex acute to rounded, usually with short mucro, rarely retuse; veins 12–20 on each side; petiole 0.8–2.5 cm long, grooved above, covered with dense, branched hairs, sometimes with glandular hairs, usually deciduous. Flowers red, 5–15 in a terminal subumbeliform inflorescence; peduncle 1.5–2.5 cm long; pedicels 0.4–1.3 cm long, with dense whitish to light brownish hairs. Calyx 2 mm long, 5–6-lobed, lobes triangular, apex rounded. Corolla campanulate-cylindrical, 3.5–4.5 by 1.5–2 cm, 5–6 lobed; lobes rounded, 1.5 by 1–1.5 cm. Stamens 10, unequal; filaments white, glabrous, reddish-purple at base; anthers brown. Ovary cylindrical, 5–6 by 3.5 mm, with dense whitish or light brownish hairs; styles 3–4 cm long, glabrous; stigma capitate, dark red. Capsules cylindrical, 1.2–2 by 0.6–0.8 cm, densely covered with black hairs. Seeds ca 1 by 0.3 mm.

Distribution : India, Myanmar, Yunnan (type).
Ecology : In montane forests, 1,800–2,500 m alt. Flowering: February–May.
Vernacular : Kham daeng (คําแดง)(Chiang Mai); kulap daeng (กุหลาบแดง), kulap phan pi (กุหลาบพันปี)(Central).
