Description : Deciduous tree to 20 m; new branchlets glabrous to densely hairy and glabrescent. Buds ovoid, to 4 mm long, glabrous, margins overlapping. Stipules obliquely ovate, to 1 cm long but often much smaller, margin toothed. Leaves with petiole to 3 cm long, glabrous to densely hairy at first, glabrescent; blade ovate to linear-lanceolate, to 16 by 4 cm, base cuneate to rounded, often somewhat asymmetric, margin toothed, a gland at apex of each tooth, the basal gland on each side at junction of petiole and blade, apex acuminate; up to 24 pairs of lateral veins; glabrous to densely hairy at first, when hairy the hairs on lower surface denser, glabrescent, lower surface sometimes glaucous. Catkins to 15 cm long, emerging from axils of fallen leaves from previous year; rhachis woolly hairy, up to 3 leaf-like bracts near base, the uppermost one sometimes subtending a flower; the remainder of the rhachis with many sessile flowers, each subtended by a woolly hairy ovate bract ca 1 mm long. Male flower with 2 glands, the adaxial one small (< 1 mm diam) but prominent, the abaxial one smaller, difficult to see; stamens 4–10; filaments to 4 mm long. Female flower with adaxial gland similar to that on male flower, abaxial gland lacking; ovary ovoid, to 3 mm long, on a stipe to 2 mm long; style short, divided at very apex, stigmas 2-lobed. Capsule ovoid, glabrous, to 6 mm long, stipe to 3 mm long. Seeds few, small, surrounded by long hairs that completely fill capsule.

Distribution : India (type), Pakistan, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines.


Ecology : Along streams, from lowlands to 1,900 m alt.
