Description : Trees to 20 m tall; bark light brown, blackish or grey, thick and vertically roughly cracked (salao). Leaves: petiole 0.3–0.5(–1) cm long; lamina densely finely hairy on both surfaces, hairs simple, 0.5 mm long, later glabrous on upper leaf surface except for midrib and veins, 5–10(–15) by 2–5 cm; lateral veins 5–8 on each side; intercostal venation reticulate(-scalariform). Inflorescences terminal, condensed, 2.5–8 cm long, densely finely white-hairy. Flowers: bud densely finely white-hairy, obconical, (3–)4–5 mm long, pseudopedicel 1–2 mm long; calyx tube ca 3 mm long, distinctly 4–6-ridged, ridges irregularly undulately winged, auricles absent; calyx lobes glabrous within, ca 2 mm long; petals white, small or absent, blade elliptic ca 4 mm long (including claw), margin entire; stamens radially dimorphic (6 or 7 outer stamens longer than numerous inner ones); ovary glabrous. Infructescences compact; capsules (pale) brown, dull, shagreen (finely longitudinally striate), glabrous, 15–17 mm long, 4- or 5-valved; fruiting calyx tube with irregularly winged ridges, calyx lobes small, thin; fruiting pseudopedicel 1–2(–3) mm long.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son (Khun Yuam, Mae Sariang), Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Doi Inthanon NP, Mae Taeng, Mae Rim, Fang, Doi Chiang Dao), Chiang Rai (Doi Tam Tu Pu, Khun Kon Falls), Lamphun (Doi Khun Tan NP, Li), Lampang (Chae Son NP, Doi Luang NP), Tak (Umphang), Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Prangkasi, Wangka – type of Lagerstroemia villosa var. sparsior: Kerr 10461, holotype -K, isotypes -BKF BM E).
Distribution : Myanmar (lectotype of Lagerstroemia villosa: Kurz 1343), China (Yunnan).
Ecology : Mostly open places, evergreen, evergreen seasonal and deciduous forests, often with much bamboo; granite, shale, and limestone bedrock; 150–1,125 m alt. Flowering: March–June; fruiting: April–February.
Vernacular : Khia nia (เคี้ยเนี้ย), mun thao (มูลเถ้า)(Loei); khaeo nuea (แค้วเนื้อ)(Phetchabun); pueai san (เปื๋อยสาร), salao dam (เสลาดำ), (เส้าหมื่น) sao muen (Northern); sa mo rat (สมอรัด)(Phichit, Surat Thani); salao bai lek (เสลาใบเล็ก)(Kanchanaburi); salao plueak na (เสลาเปลือกหนา)(Kamphaeng Phet).
Notes: All filaments are white, all with dark anthers with white pollen.
