Description : Shrubby herb to 2 m tall; stems rounded, smooth, glabrous. Leaves ovate, 3–10 x 1.8–5 cm, base cuneate, apex obtuse, attenuate on to the petiole, upper and lower surface glabrous, with scattered hairs, margin crenate; inflorescence terminal, unbranched, up to 50 cm long by 3–4 mm wide; bracts ovate, glabrous with fimbriate margin; calyx tubular, 4-toothed, ca 6 mm long; corolla pale to deep blue or purple, hypocrateriform, tube ca 8 mm long, straight, lobes ca 1.5 mm across; stamens attached above middle with short filaments; style ca 6 mm long, slightly exserted; fruit dark brown to black, reticulate.

Distribution : Tropical America and widely naturalised throughout tropical and subtropical regions.


Ecology : Open areas, grasslands, roadside, sea strands and river banks.


Vernacular : Chek chap kop (เจ๊กจับกบ)(Trat); dueai ngu (เดือยงู), phra in proi (พระอินทร์โปรย)(Chumporn); phan ngu khiao (พันงูเขียว), saraphat phit (สารพัดพิษ), si bat (สี่บาท)(Central); lang-thueng-duk (ลังถึ่งดุ้ก)(Karen-Mae hong Son); ya nuat suea (หญ้าหนวดเสือ)(Northern); ya hang ngu (หญ้าหางงู)(Peninsular).
