Description : Trees, up to 23 m high by 53 cm diam., sometimes shrubs. Leaves chartaceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, sometimes broad-elliptic, obovate or obovate oblong, 5–20 by 2–9 cm, base cuneate, rounded or attenuate, apex acute to acuminate, margin entire, rarely crenate in the upper half, petiole 5–8 mm long. Flowers 5-merous, axillary and extra-axillary, 1-several on a short, tubercular glomerule, very rarely in obscure or very short pedunculate simple cymes; bracts lanceolate, fimbriate, ca 1 mm long; pedicels (0.5–)1–2 cm long. Calyx lobes unequal in size, suborbiculate, reniform or ovate, 1–3.5(–5) by 1.5–4(–6) mm. Petals broadly obovate or suborbiculate, 4.5–5 by 3.5–6.5 mm, fimbriate. Disk fleshy, 2.5–3 mm in diam. Stamens ca 2.5 mm long. Ovary 3-loculed. Fruits red, usually clavate or broadly obovoid, rarely globose, 2–3.5 by 1.5–2.5 cm. Seeds 1 or 2 in each locule.

Distribution : India (Andaman Islands – type, Nicobars), Myanmar (Tenasserim), Laos, Vietnam, Malay Peninsula (also Penang Island), Indonesia, the Philippines.


Ecology : Evergreen forests, 20–1,500 m alt. Flowering: January–March, May, June; fruiting: March, May–October.


Vernacular : Kraduk kai (กระดูกไก่).
