Description : Tree, 4–8 m high, 30–50 cm girth. Terminal buds ovoid, ca 3 by 2 mm; bracts linear, 3–5 mm long, pubescent outside. Twigs tomentose then glabrescent. Stipules linear, ca 1 cm long, glabrous, not early caducous. Leaves ovate-elliptic, 3–7.5 by 2.2–4.5 cm; base broadly obtuse or cordate; apex obtuse or broadly acute; margins entire; coriaceous, glabrous except along midrib on the upper surface; pubescent then glabrescent on the lower; midrib and nerves raised on the lower surface; depressed on the upper; lateral nerves 8–12 pairs, anastomosing near margins; reticulate veins inconspicuous on the lower surface. Petiole 2–4 mm, pubescent then glabrescent. Male inflorescence a catkin, usually tufted, pendulous, axillary, upper leaf scars, or terminal, 5–10 cm long, tomentose; bracts and bracteoles triangular or ovate, pubescent outside, ciliate. Male flowers free or in 1–3-flowered cluster; perianth 4–6-lobed, lobes united to half, pubescent outside, ciliate; stamens 4–6–7, 1.5–2 mm long, hairy near base. Female inflorescence spike erect, short, axillary. Female flowers 2–4 in each spike; styles 3, connate; stigmata elongate, decurved. Acorns ovoid or elliptic, 1.5–2 by 2–2.5 cm (including cupule), fruit stalk 3–5 mm long, on erect infructescence 1.5–2 cm long, each infructescence with (1) 2 acorns. Cupule cup or saucer-shaped, enclosing ½ of the nut (more or less obovoid and enclosed completely, except the umbo when young); wall comprising alternate, thin, pubescent scales throughout. Nut 1, globose or ovoid, 1.5–2 by 1.5–1.7 cm, glabrous and more or less wrinkled.

Distribution : Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal (type), Pakistan, China.
Ecology : Exposed ridges in lower montane rain forests, on limestone bedrock, 1,950–2,200 m alt. Flowering: May; fruiting: April–July (most commonly May–June).
Vernacular : Ko chiangdao (ก่อเชียงดาว).
