Description : Perennial herb up to 1 m. Leaves linear-lanceolate, in rosette and along the stem, with sheathing base, 50–80 cm long, 10–30 cm broad. Inflorescence longer than leaves, with few branches; pedicels 5–15 mm. Tepals various shades of blue, green to yellowish, 5–7 mm long. Stamens about half as long as tepals. Ovary green with few ovules per locule. Fruit shining blue, ca 10 mm long. Seeds globose, 3–4 mm long.
Thailand : Common all over the country.
Distribution : Widely distributed from Madagascar and throughout India to S China, SE & E Asia to E Australia and several Pacific Islands.
Ecology : In all forests types as well as in open grasslands, from sea level up to about 2,000 m alt.
Vernacular : Ma phrao pa (มะพร้าวป่า), sikhan chai (ศรีคันไชย)(Chiang Mai); wan mit yap (ว่านมีดยับ)(Northern); ko kam laen (โก่กำแล่น)(Chaiyaphum); hom daeng (หอมแดง)(Central); lamphan (ลำพัน)(Chanthaburi); ya nu (หญ้าหนู)(Pattani); ya nu ton (หญ้าหนูต้น)(Pattani, Ranong); si-ya (ซียะ), sia-a (เซียอ๊ะ)(Malay-Narathiwat).
