Accepted Name : This is currently accepted.


Description : Small shrub, height unknown. Twigs terete, the bark whitish grey. Leaves with petiole 2.1–2.5 mm; lamina 3.8–3.9 by 1.7–1.9 cm, ovate or oblong elliptic, base acute or obtuse, apex acute; midrib impressed on the upper surface, secondary veins 6–7 pairs, intramarginal vein absent. Flowers with long slender peduncle to 2 cm. Hypanthial cup 2 mm, funnel shaped. Sepals 4, 3.6–4.3 mm, oblong to triangular with acute apex. Petals 4, 7–8 mm, free, orbicular or obovate, membranous, petals sparsely gland dotted. Outer stamens ca 5 mm; anther 0.6 mm, oblong. Style 4–6 mm, approximating the stamens. Ovary 2-locular. Fruits 1.5 by 1.5–2 cm, globose.


Thailand : Introduced, uncommon.


Distribution : Native to Brazil, cultivated in tropical Asia (Sri Lanka – type).


Ecology : Cultivated for its edible fruits and known only from cultivation.


Vernacular : Mayom farang (มะยมฝรั่ง)(Bangkok).


CommonName : Pitanga, Surinam Cherry, Cayenne Cherry.


Notes: Eugenia uniflora has a distinct long peduncle, few flowers, secondary veins not forming an intramarginal vein and longitudinal ridges on the ovary.
