Description : Shrub, 1–5 m high, stellate hairy on all parts. Leaves elliptic, ovate, or elliptic oblong, 5–20 x 2–6 cm, subcoriaceous, apex acute to caudate, base cuneate and oblique, doubly serrate or serrate; 3(–5) basal nerves, secondary nerves 3–7 pairs, scalariform veins conspicuous on both surfaces. Petiole 5–25 mm long, acute. Inflorescences axillary, erect, up to 2 cm long. Calyx tubular, curved, with 5 unequal lobes, hairy externally. Petals purple, oblanceolate, 2–2.5 x 0.3 cm, undulate, acute. Stamens 10, on a horn-like, glabrous column. Ovary ovoid oblong, surrounded by the ring of stamens, with 5 hairy longitudinal lobes, stigma flattened, slightly 5-lobed. Capsule oblong, 3–5 x 1.5 cm, with 5-longitudinal lobes, covered with shaggy hairs, dehiscent.

Distribution : India, S China, Vietnam (N Vietnam – type), Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, Philippine.
Ecology : Common in deciduous and dry evergreen forests, 50–1,000 m alt. Flowering and fruiting all year round.
Vernacular : Po tao hai (ปอเต่าไห้)(Northeastern); chapan (ช้าปาน), khi tun (ขี้ตุ่น)(Southeastern); khi on (ขี้อ้น), phang rae (พังแระ), phumi (พูมี่)(Peninsular).
