Description : Evergreen tree, 15–30 m high; bark dark brown, shallowly fissured and flaking, twigs glabrous, thickened at the nodes. Stipules obovate to oblanceolate, thick, flattend, 1.5–2.5 x 1 cm, glabrescent. Leaves broadly ovate or tri-lobed, 5–16 x 4–12 cm, coriaceous, glabrous, apex acute, base obtuse, rounded or subcordate, margin entire or lobed; 3–5-nerved from base, impressed above, prominent on lower surface, secondary nerves 2–5 pairs, faintly distinct; petiole 2–6 cm long, glabrous, with a red tinge. Hermaphrodite flowers in globose heads, up to 1.5 cm diam, at or near end of shoots. Petals 2–7, linear to spathulate, 2–3 0.5 mm. Stamens 10–14. Ovary conical, half inferior, hairy, styles 2, glabrous. Capsules 7–11 per head, glabrous; head 2–2.5 cm diam, woody; stalk 1.5–2.5 cm. Seeds ellipsoid, fertile ones winged, sterile ones wingless.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Doi Inthanon).


Distribution : S China, India (type), Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Vietnam, Malay Peninsula, Indonesia.


Ecology : In hill evergreen forests, 1,600–2,200 m alt. Flowering and fruiting: January–June.


Vernacular : Pho sam hang (โพสามหาง)(Northern).


Notes: Most of species in this family are considered as rare in Thailand.
