Description : Annual herb, up to 1.5 m high. Leaves shallowly tri-lobed on the upper half, hairy, glabrescent, 2–10 by 1.5–8 cm, cuspidate; obtuse to truncate at base; margin doubly serrate; 3–5-nerved at base; secondary nerves 1–3 pairs; scalariform veins hardly distinct; petioles 0.5–4 cm, hairy. Inflorescence terminal and leaf-opposed; flower buds oblong, ± 4 by 1 mm. Sepals linear. Petals spathulate, ± 5 by 1.5 mm. Stamens glabrous. Ovary globose, hairy. Fruit globose, ± 1 cm across, spines hairy on the lower half.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, Tak, Nakhon Sawan; NORTH-EASTERN: Loei; EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima; CENTRAL: Chai Nat; SOUTH-EASTERN: Rayong; SOUTH-WESTERN: Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan; PENINSULAR: Ranong, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Songkhla, Narathiwat.
Distribution : China, India (type), Nepal, Ceylon, Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, S Pacific, Australia, Africa.
Ecology : In open clearings and seashores, in scrub, deciduous and dry evergreen forests. On sandy soil and limestone rock, from sea level to 800 m alt. Flowering and fruiting: October–December.
Vernacular : Po yumyu (ปอหยุมยู่), po seng (ปอเส้ง), phom yung noi (ผมยุ่งน้อย)(Northern); mak tangtun (หมากตังตุน)(Northeastern); seng (เส้ง), khi khrok lek (ขี้ครอกเล็ก)(Southwestern); king khok lek (กิ้งคกเล็ก)(Central).
Uses: Bark produces good fibres for rope making.
