Description : Tree up to 10 m. Leaves: rhachis 15–50 cm long, glabrous; leaflets 3–7 pairs, ovate to lanceolate, 8–30 by 2–8 cm, acuminate or rounded at the tip, cuneate to rounded at the base, glabrous, pale or greenish-brown when dry; nerves 8–10 pairs, curved along the margin; petiolules 3–10 mm. Corymbs 10–20 cm diam; branches slender up to 3 mm diam, glabrous or puberulent. Bracts ovate-acute, 3–12 by 2–7 mm, caducous or ± persistent; bracteoles oval to obovate, rounded, 4–18 by 3–10, spreading, persistent, reddish. Pedicels 20–35 mm, included the part above the bracteoles 2–5 mm long. Receptacle 10–30 mm long. Sepals 4, oval to obovate, 6–14 by 3–6 mm, reddish. Stamens (3–)4(–5). Ovary glabrous to ciliate at margin; ovules 6–9. Pods 1.5–2 cm stipitate, oblong to lanceolate, 10–30 by 3–6 cm, straight or curved at apex and shortly beaked (± 1 cm), cuneate or obliquely rounded at base.


Thailand : EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima; SOUTH-EASTERN: Chanthaburi, Trat; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi; PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phangnga, Trang, Satun.


Distribution : Burma, Laos, S Vietnam, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra (type), Java, Borneo.


Ecology : In evergreen forests, along streams and fringes. Flowering: January–May; fruiting: August.


Vernacular : Sok bai lek (โสกใบเล็ก)(Southeastern); som sok (สมโสก), sok (โสก)(Eastern, Southeastern); sok khao (โสกเขา)(Southeastern, Peninsular); rok(โรก)(Southwestern); sok nam (โสกน้ำ), chumsaeng khuan (ชุมแสงควน), kathe (กาเทะ),ngo (เงาะ), khem daeng (แข็มแดง), kllem som (เข็มส้ม), hu yan (หูยาน)(Peninsular); do-la(โดละ), ta-bue-ka (ตะบือกะ), ta-pi-ka (ตะปี๊กะ), ka-pae ba-sa (กาแปะบาซะ), ka-pae bu-ke (กาแปะบูเก้ะ), bu-ko-lao (บูกอเลา)(Malay-Peninsular); pa-ngan (ปะงัล)(Khmer-Southeastern).


Uses: Cultivated as ormamehtal.
