Description : Low shrub to medium sized tree; twigs glabrous (or nearly so), on innovationssometimes hairy; terminal buds usually hairy. Leaves glabrous, 2–10 by 0.75–4.5 cm; margin glandular dentate, denticulate or crenulate; base attenuate; apex acuminate to caudate, acumen 3–20 mm; nerves 5–8 pairs, meeting in a rather inconspicuous intramarginal vein close to the margin; reticulation fine to rather coarse; petiole 2–10 mm. Inflorescence a few to many-flowered axillary raceme, 1–6 mm long, the base surrounded by several cataphylls; axis and the 0.5–13 mm long pedicels from nearly glabrous to pilose or pubescent; bract at base of pedicel, appressed-hairy, 2–5 mm; bracteoles under the flower 0.5–4 mm, both very soon caducous. Calyx glabrous to (sparsely) appressed-hairy, divided into the ciliate 0.35–1.5 mm long lobes which are much shorter to slightly longer than the ovary. Corolla 4–8(–11) mm. Stamens 25–40. Disk glabrous, mostly annular. Ovary glabrous to shortly appressed-hairy, 1–2 mm high; style glabrous. Fruit ovoid to ampulliform, 6–10 by 3–6 mm; mesocarp chartaceous, brittle when dry; stone shallowly ruminate. Seed curved, embryo once or twice curved.

Distribution : India (type), Burma, Malaya, Indochina, China, Hainan, Formosa, Korea, Ryu Kyu Islands, Japan.
Ecology : In evergreen forests, 300–2,000 m alt.
Vernacular : Muat pla siu (เหมือดปลาซิว)(Eastern); muat dok (เหมือดดอก), muat khon dam (เหมือดคนดำ)(Northeastern).
