Description : Evergreen tree, up to 30 m high; twigs glabrous. Leaves (obovate-) lanceolate, 7–19 by 1.5–5.5 cm, serrate; base cuneate or acute; apex acute; glabrous on upper surface, pubescent and glabrescent on lower surface; secondary nerves 6–9 pairs, arched but not anastomosing, distinct on upper surface, prominent and usually with domatia in axils on lower surface; petiole 0.5–4 cm long. ± glabrous. Inflorescences in axils of present leaves, 6–10 cm long; pedicels 2.5 cm long, glabrous. Sepals lanceolate, 1–1.5 by 0.2 cm, pubescent, later glabrescent on both sides. Petals obovate, ± 1.5 by 1 cm, sparsely hairy on both sides, with 2 basal hairy ridges inside, each about ⅖ the length; laciniae about ⅕ the length of the petal. Stamens 25–60, 9–10 mm long, ± glabrous; anthers aristate at apex. Ovary ovoid, densely covered with short hairs, 2-locular; style hairy; disc indistinctly 10-lobed. Drupes ellipsoid, 3–4 by 1.5–2 cm; dry with thin epicarp, glabrous; acute at both ends; fruit stalks 2–6 cm long, glabrous; seed 1, embryo straight.
Thailand : Throughout the country.
Distribution : India, Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, (type not designated).
Ecology : Frequent by streams in evergreen forests, 50–800 m alt., once recorded to occur in mangrove (Vanpruk 625). Flowering and fruiting: January–September.
Vernacular : Saraphi nam (สารภีน้ำ), khrai yoi (ไคร้ย้อย)(Northern); pumpa (ปุมป้า), mun nam (มุ่นน้ำ)(Northeastern); taeo nam (แต้วน้ำ)(Eastern); chick (จิก), dok pi mai (ดอกปีใหม่)(Southwestern); khlai song hu (คล้ายสองหู), phi nai (ผีหน่าย)(Peninsular).
